Alak Vasa, Founder of Elements Truffles, grew up in Birmingham, England. Right from a young age, Alak had a distinguished palate when it came to chocolate. One of her favorite memories growing up was her Dad returning home from work trips with a box of chocolates from his travels. While working as a Wall Street Trader in New York City, Alak was known around the office as someone who would celebrate a co-worker’s birthday with homemade sweets. She also had a special fondness for Financier Patisserie, a French bakery located close to her office. One day she talked with the Chef to ask his advice about enrolling in culinary school. He suggested she intern at his bakery to get a real feel for a day in the life of a chef before investing in school. So for the next 6 months, Alak worked every Saturday at Financier Patisserie. She loved it! Alak knew then it was something she wanted to pursue. Although she continued to work at her day job for the next 5 years, she developed and honed her baking and chocolate making skills at home at night and on the weekends.
During this time Alak and her husband took an Ayurveda meditation class with a focus on Sudarshan Kriya, a specific breathing technique. Ayurveda, a holistic traditional method founded in India, focuses on diet, herbal remedies, breathing, exercises, and meditation to treat the mind, body, and spirit to ensure a healthy balance in life. There is also a connection between the five elements (space, air, fire, water, and earth) and the six tastes or Rasas (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, pungent and astringent). Inspired by Ayurveda, Alak incorporated Ayurveda and the 5 elements into her chocolate making process. She also started to experiment blending superfoods such as dates and apricots, local New Jersey honey as the natural sweetener, and raw, a dairy and preservative-free chocolate to make a line of chocolate bars and truffles. The first launch of Elements Truffles at a farmer’s market in Jersey City, New Jersey was a tremendous success. Elements Truffles sold out within a couple of hours forcing Alak to work through the night to prepare for the next day. After working in a local small kitchen in Jersey City, Alak and her team of 6 moved to a larger entrepreneurial shared kitchen space in Kearny, New Jersey.
Elements Truffles is a small-batch chocolate company offering the following flavored bars: Raspberry, Orange Pistachio, Sea Salt, Peppermint, and Rose. Last fall, Elements Truffles celebrated their two year anniversary. Alak has also instilled a corporate philosophy focused on giving back to the community. Each of her team members is required to volunteer 5 hours every week to a charity of their choice. So it truly is a “Feel Good” chocolate. Valentine’s Day is around the corner in case you need an excuse to indulge and Amazon and UncommonGoods now sell their bars online.
